What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup queries the Domain Name System to resolve a hostname into its associated records. Different record types serve different purposes: A records map a domain to an IPv4 address, MX records define mail servers, TXT records are used for SPF, DKIM and domain verification, and NS records identify the authoritative name servers for a zone.

Common DNS record types

AIPv4 address for a domain
AAAAIPv6 address for a domain
MXMail server for a domain
CNAMEAlias pointing to another domain
